Bad Piggies Turns The Tables
Just when you thought the Angry Birds were getting the upper hand, the pigs re-invent the wheel. Bad Piggies is the next chapter in the ongoing Angry Birds franchise. Evolution of the game comes from the pig perspective. As the antagonist, the objective is to snatch those eggs by any means necessary. Instead of building up fortresses to prevent bird attacks, the geniuses at Rovio, decided to take a page from their Amazing Alex (link to amazing alex walkthrough?) playbook and have the pigs building random things to get to the eggs. All kinds of ramshackle modes of transportation await construction, ranging from hunks of junk to machines that soar. You’ll be up to your eyeballs trying to navigate the twists and turns of the course in Bad Piggies.
Angry Birds sounds so much simpler than what Bad Piggies has in store, but Rovio have incorporated a new “blueprint mode” into this game that allows you to easily tap, drag and drop different objects to create the different modes of transportation. There’s actually a charming Roadrunner vs Acme Inc. vibe to the game. Making a concerted effort to have new and separate branding from its sister Angry Birds franchise, Rovio is doing a great job of creating distance. Angry Birds and Bad Piggies are polar opposite, in terms of gameplay and logic, which is the point. This natural evolution of the game creates both viewpoints and establishes two separate alliances. It takes all different styles, ideas and walks of life to create a world or community. Rovio knows this and has set out to create a wide variety of options for their customers and fans of the games.
The most glaring difference in gameplay logic between both games is that in Angry Birds, your objective is to smash and destroy, while Bad Piggies has you building and planning. Rovio’s success with Angry Birds grossed over $100 million in revenue, in 2011 alone. Since the initial release, Angry Birds has been downloaded over 1 Billion times globally. Feature films, toy lines and theme parks are in the not-so-distant future and like Disney, the Finnish game developer is planning for long-term stability and a global brand.
Most people would think that anything else Rovio releases will pale in comparison to the original Angry Birds franchise, but the developers are committed to pushing Bad Piggies. Treating it as a “sibling” to Angry Birds, the developers understand that it will require a long-term commitment and ingenuity to get the Bad Piggies into our collective conscience. Bad Piggies is set to be released on September 27th for iOS and Android devices. Plans are also in the works for the game to be released to the PC and Windows Phone devices, in the future.
