Rovio Mobile Poised For Dominance With Bad Piggies
Rovio Mobile, the Finnish developers of the franchises Angry Birds and Amazing Alex are poised to continue their trend setting ways for the next few years. An industry leader in mobile app development, since Angry Birds debuted in December 2009, Rovio continues to push the boundaries of monetization and brand building.
From 2009 to 2012, Rovio has focused solely on its Angry Birds franchise. Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio all had similar plot points that were comprised of levels that had themes. Episodes were then established to keep these levels and themes nice and tidy. In 2012, Angry Birds Space was released to mix reviews. Most fans of the game had become accustomed to traditional usage of physics and gravity. Rovio blew people’s minds by using gravitational pull, space and science for this version of the game.
Some of the features that Rovio had introduced to this point included :
* 3 stars to unlock secret levels
* An in-app purchase for a special bird called, Mighty Eagle, which eliminates everything on that round and can be used only once.
* A variety of birds that have different functionality and usefulness.
* Different types of building blocks that also provide different functionality and challenges.
As Angry Birds continued to gain in popularity, other mobile app developers began to use these similar practices to further their own brands. Later in 2012, a new game was introduced by Rovio, entitled Amazing Alex. The objective of this game was to build clear pathways for objects to travel from one spot to the other, depending on the scenario that was presented. What was curious about this release was that it had absolutely nothing to do with Angry Birds. Rovio has now unveiled the connection between Angry Birds and Amazing Alex with the upcoming debut of Bad Piggies.
Bucking the industry trend, not only did Rovio debut a completely separate franchise, they managed to tie them both together with a third brand. Bad Piggies is a role-reversal, of sorts, for Angry Birds. This game has you playing the role of the pig, trying to quelch your cravings for bird eggs. Amazing Alex ties together nicely with Angry Birds, in that the pigs now have to take random objects that are available on each level, and put together a bridge, a path or even a mode of transportation, which gets them closest to those eggs. All of the same puzzle pieces, styles and strategies used in Amazing Alex will now be on full display for Bad Piggies.
Building fortresses and new ways to get the eggs is a drastically different puzzle than smashing birds into buildings to get to the pigs. Much like other popular games on gaming consoles, you can now choose to be the babyface (Angry Birds) or the heel (Bad Piggies). The only difference is that they are not inside the same app. You’ll have to choose one and Rovio Mobile is hoping that you choose to give Bad Piggies the same love you showed the Angry Birds. They are hoping to be a publicly traded stock by the end of 2013 and to do that, they need consumer demand for their games. If they even have a fraction of the downloads they achieved with Angry Birds, they will be further towards their goals of world domination.
In all seriousness, Bad Piggies has a tentative street date of September 27th and we will give you updates, as the latest news develops for this game.
